The return of Master Chief to Fortnite’s Item Shop last night was met with disappointment by some fans, as it came with an unexpected change to the character’s Xbox-exclusive design. Previously, players who enjoyed Fortnite on Xbox consoles or through Xbox Cloud Gaming were able to unlock a special Matte Black version of the Master Chief skin. However, upon his return to the shop, new buyers found that this exclusive variant was no longer available.
Later, Epic Games clarified through the game’s support account on X, revealing that the Matte Black style for Master Chief is now "no longer unlockable" and is restricted to players who had already purchased the skin before this month. This change contradicted an earlier statement from Epic Games in 2020, where the company had promised that the Xbox-exclusive version would remain available "at ANY point in the future," with no time limit on unlocking the style.
The situation sparked backlash from the Fortnite community, with many fans noting the inconsistency and feeling the announcement was poorly handled. Epic Games only made the change public after the skin had already returned to the shop. To add to the confusion, Epic has not yet explained why the Xbox-exclusive version has been discontinued or if similar console-exclusive skins, such as PlayStation's Aloy from Horizon, will also be affected.
In more positive news, Fortnite has launched its Cyberpunk 2077 crossover, bringing skins for Johnny Silverhand and V to the game.
